Forest Fragmentation and Fires in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon–Maranhão State, Brazil

چکیده
Tropical forests provide essential environmental services to human well-being. In the world, Brazil has largest continuous area of these forests. However, in state Maranhão, eastern Amazon, only 24% original forest cover remains. We integrated and analyzed active fires, burned area, land use cover, rainfall, surface temperature datasets understand fragmentation fire dynamics from a remote sensing approach. found that Maranhão Amazon region had net reduction 31,302 km2 between 1985 2017, with 63% losses occurring core areas. Forest edges extent was reduced by 38%, while size isolated patches increased 239%. fires impacted, on average, around 1031 ± 695 year−1 2003 equivalent 60% total this period. Our results demonstrated is an important factor controlling temporal spatial variability region. Thus, both directly indirectly, can compromise biodiversity carbon stocks

This paper presents a summary of the forest fire reports in the insular Caribbean derived from both management reports and an analysis of publicly available Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrodiometer (MODIS) satellite active fire products from the region. A vast difference between the amount of fires reported by land managers and fire points in the MODIS Fire Information for Resource Managemen...
متن کاملFragmentation of forest communities in the eastern United States
Forest fragmentation threatens the sustainability of forest communities in the eastern United States. Forest communities exhibiting either a low total area or low percentage of intact forest are subject to relatively higher risk of shifts in stand composition towards edge-adapted and invasive species. Such changes in stand composition could result in local extirpation of communities, homogeniza...
متن کاملSearching for bioindicators of forest fragmentation: passerine birds in the Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil.
Aiming to evaluate the potential of Passerine birds as bioindicators of forest fragmentation, we studied the avifauna in the mountain region of the state of Rio de Janeiro by mist-netting between 2001 and 2005. We sampled six sites, including four small fragments (from 4 to 64 ha) in an agricultural area (Teresópolis), one second-growth forest (440 ha - Miguel Pereira) and a continuous forest (...
متن کاملThe Spread of Forest Fires
We create a simple discrete probabilistic model for spread of a forest fire. We examine the conditions for which the fire will either die out or spread indefinitely, identifying and bounding a critical value for the probability of transmission of the fire to an immediately adjacent location. PREREQUISITES: Summation of geometric series, elementary probability, intuitive limits; for the Appendix...
متن کاملForest Fires and Remote Sensing
The use of remote sensing techniques for the study of forest fires is a subject that started already several years ago and whose possibilities have been increasing as new sensors were incorporated into earth observation international programmes and new goals were reached based on the improved techniques that have been introduced. Three main topics can be distinguished, in which remote sensing p...
